An American In Dorset A Teacher Journey in the Hills of Wessex Patrick Egan 9781490328485 Books Reviews
A delightful memoir of a teacher who spends a year teaching in a British school and how he grows and changes and afterwards is able to see the world with fresh eyes. Part travel essay and part personal confession, it details how a disillusioned teacher accepts a position overseas in hopes of regaining his passion and focus. His experiences with colleagues and folks he meets while traveling help him to laugh, learn and love.
I would recommend this for anyone planning a trip to the United Kingdom, specifially southern England, as the place descriptions are wonderful and highlight an area that is often overlooked in a country with so much to offer. Dorset has amazing history and charm, and it is beautifully captured in this book.
Patrick Egan's books really touch me. His flair for capturing the human experience never fails to surprise me. To say that his writing is insightful, sensitive, intellectual, and captivating would be merely scraping the tip of the iceberg. Surprisingly, he accomplishes all of this while fitting in a sense of humor and an attention to detail- yet remaining somehow concise.
Try out his work and see for yourself. You won't regret it - I didn't.
This is an entertaining tale of an American who exchanged a year of teaching in Dorset with a Britisher who teaches in America. The beautiful prose with which Egan describes the life of teaching under a system very different to the one he is used is humorous, joyous and informative. He also gives a good amount to describing the friends he made and the travels to Ireland, France, Greece and England itself. His writing is graceful and thoughtful. A good read.
Another super book by a great new author. His side trip to meet family in Ireland brought back memories of my own Irish visits many years ago.
Another book that I could not put down. It held my interest with every page. I was able to transport myself to all of these amazing places in England.
I'm waiting for your next book. Please tell me that there will be another.
